This is how it begins.

It took only two weeks for the first cases to be recognized, but it has been 8 months since those first infected individuals got on a plane and spread the virus to an unsuspecting 362 fellow travelers. It began late in April, just before the summer holidays began. A military unit marched through a wide grassland toward the border when explosions violently ripped through three transport vehicles. The unit stopped and scattered into defensive positions and began to settle in for what would be a three-week standoff. Eventually, governmental intervention caused the removal of all military personnel from the area on both sides. What was left was a litter of debris, hundreds of pits in the field formed from a barrage of mortar and missile fire, and small fires that burned the grass of what was once a peaceful meadow. Amidst the debris, a concrete roof partly concealed by the overgrowth of tall grass was now collapsed in on itself. The structure was unnoticed by any of the military presence while there, nor would it have been on any map. The three story underground structure had been sealed and abandoned for nearly five decades. It had passed from recollection for almost everyone that lived in the area and had been deleted from records that might have identified its location.
